THOL WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, GUJARAT - RAMSAR WETLAND 2021

Thol Wildlife Sanctuary spans 699 hectares of shallow freshwater wetland in North Gujarat. Declared a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2021, it hosts one of the highest concentrations of migratory waterbirds in western India.

Of its 327 recorded species, 34 appear on the IUCN Red List as Near Threatened or above - species whose survival depends entirely on the continued health of this one ecosystem.

This project began with a visit during peak season in 2024. What I found was quieter than expected. Construction activity on the periphery, increasing tourist disturbance near the water's edge, and a stillness that felt less like peace and more like absence.

The Silent Ecology is an attempt to make that absence audible.
